~ OUR SUPER HEROES NEED X-RAY VISION!! ~
An X-Ray machine is desperately needed at Citrus County Animal Services (CCAS) to accurately diagnose and to provide timely treatment to the animals in their care. CCAS sees more than 4,000 animals each year – many arriving sick or injured.
When x-rays are needed, there is a delay in being able to treat the animals due to appointment availability and the logistics of using offsite x-ray services. Transporting injured animals causes pain, fear, stress, and results in unnecessary delays which can make the condition much worse and harder to treat.
The veterinarian currently prioritizes which animals are sent for X-rays due to budgetary constraints. In spite of being selective regarding utilization of offsite x-rays, CCAS spends thousands each year for this service in addition to utilizing valuable staff time to transport animals back and forth, taking them away from important animal care duties at the shelter. Having an x-ray machine at CCAS would eliminate the expense of off-site services and would also be used to diagnose many other conditions such as cancers, hernias, bladder stones, broken bones, internal injuries, heartworm severity, etc.
CCAS cares for many animals who are brought in as protective custody/legal cases. An on-site x-ray machine will allow the veterinarian to identify past and present internal trauma which provides documented evidence and bolsters the ability to prosecute animal abusers.
The cost of an X-ray machine and accessories is $76,000. This important project can only be accomplished by the kindness and generosity of the community. Whatever amount you can give towards this purchase will go far in reducing suffering of animals that arrive sick or injured.
